What is a “cookie”?

A “cookie module” or simpler “cookie(s)”, is a small piece of text, composed of letters and numbers, sent to your browser on your device (laptop, desktop, tablet smartphone) by the website you visit or a third party website that the first party has an agreement with, like Google or Amazon.

Types of “cookies”

There are different types of cookie modules that can be used by a website. In relation to their purpose those might be “necessary cookies”, “preference cookies”, “statistics cookies”, “marketing cookies” and “unclassified cookies”.

Also in relation to their availability on your device the “cookie modules” can be “persistent” or “session” cookies. Persistent cookies remain on your personal computer or mobile device when you go offline, while session cookies are deleted as soon as you close your web browser.

What does a “cookie” can and cannot do in relation to your device?

Cookies are generally designed and used so that your online experience is a simpler and faster one sending the information back to the website they belong to (be it a first or third party) allowing the website to remember data regarding your preferences like time zone, language, currency or similar information therefore making for a less frustrating online user experience.

Some cookies are used to remember the content of your virtual shopping cart or to deliver advertising based on previous choices. A “cookie” cannot be used to run programs on your computer, access information of your hard drive or deliver malicious software like viruses.

In general cookie modules do not store or retrieve personally identifiable information like name, addresses, age, sex or other similar information.
